The first half of 2026 has brought a steady stream of employment law changes, including the commencement of the Employment (Contractual Retirement Ages) Act 2025 at the end of June, meaning employees with a contractual retirement age below 66 can now request to work on to State pension age.
Meanwhile, the auto-enrolment opt-out window is open until the end of August, and many employers are still working through the practicalities of My Future Fund six months in.
Summer also brings its own workforce challenges, particularly for employers hiring casual and seasonal staff, students and young workers. Employers must understand their obligations around contracts, working time and holiday entitlements, as well as recent changes to employment permits, including the new Seasonal Employment Permit, revised salary thresholds and expanded occupation lists.
